Project Planning
In a previous post I mentioned my frustrations with MS Project and my desire to create a better alternative. That alternative is nearly to the point where I can start using it (it still needs work until I'd share it with others).
But to really make it better than MS Project, it needs to be able to answer common questions I get from producers/managers/clients. Here's my short list:
Help me out and post other common questions you might get about a project you're managing (or working on) that scheduling software should be able to help you with.

But to really make it better than MS Project, it needs to be able to answer common questions I get from producers/managers/clients. Here's my short list:
- When will the project be completed?
- What is person X working on now, and working on next?
- What tasks are ahead of schedule?
- What tasks are behind schedule?
- What is the next milestone, what features will it have in it, and when is it going to be ready?
If we add another person, what will that do to the schedule?

One thing I would love to see, is a project planning application that was able to intelligently handle resources, and then use that knowledge to order and distribute the project tasks.
In MS Project I seem to spend heaps of time 'massaging' the schedule into a realistic shape because MS Project doesn't seem to know that one developer can't devote 100% of their time to two tasks at the same time.

A couple of other things we'd like to see in a Project Management solution as we grow the Empire...
Similar to Tony's comment (btw Tony, we have an opening for a Project Manger in our Imperial Guard division), is that resources are booked on other projects. So a tool that is aware of the same resource on multiple projects, so that you can't book a person when they're already schedule on another project... as well as if they're 50% on one project, that they can only be scheduled for the remaining 50%.
And to expand on Tony's idea, being able to plug in how many hours we have of a resource. E.g some resources we have do 60hrs/week, and some are 45.
